The NHS Health Check is a sophisticated check of your heart health. Aimed at adults in England aged 40 to 74, it checks your vascular or circulatory health and works out your risk of developing some of the most disabling – but preventable – illnesses.
Think of your NHS Health Check as being your "midlife MOT". It checks that some of your body's most important systems are all running smoothly. Among other things, your blood pressure, cholesterol and Body Mass Index (BMI) will all be checked and your results given to you.
Crucially, your NHS Health Check can detect potential problems before they do real damage. Everyone is at risk of developing heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease and some forms of dementia. The good news is that these conditions can often be prevented.
Your NHS Health Check will assess your risk of developing these health problems and give you personalised advice on how to reduce it.
It's free of charge, including any follow-up tests or appointments.
If you live in the borough or are registered with a Hillingdon GP, are aged 40 to 74 years and have not already been diagnosed by a medical practitioner with the following:
If you have not had an NHS Health Check in the past 5 years, you could qualify for a Free NHS Health Check now and once every 5 years.
Even if you are feeling well, it's worth having your NHS Health Check now. We can then work with you to lower your chances of developing these health problems in the future.
Having one of these conditions can increase your risk of developing another and, together, they are the biggest cause of preventable deaths in the UK.
The free NHS Health Check is a programme that aims to reduce these conditions, which affect the body in different ways, but are all linked by a common set of risk factors.
The NHS Health Check will take about 20 to 30 minutes.
- You will be asked some simple questions, including some about your family history and lifestyle choices, which may put your health at risk.
- We will record your height, weight, waist circumference, age, sex, and ethnicity.
- We will either review your cholesterol level and blood glucose level (if you had a blood test prior to your NHS Health Check) or carry out a finger stick blood test during the appointment.
You will be taken through your results and what they mean.
- Some people may be asked to return at a later date for their results.
- You will be given personalised advice on how to lower your risk and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
- Some people with raised blood pressure will have their kidneys checked through a blood test.
- Some people may need to have another blood test to check for type 2 diabetes. Your health professional will be able to tell you more.
- Treatment or medication may be prescribed to help you maintain your health.
